Meet the all-new Renault Twingo, which has been revealed online ahead of its launch at next month's Geneva Motor Show.
Renault is attempting to rewrite the rule book with the new Twingo, with the car featuring a new rear-engined rear-wheel drive layout. The front-engined front-wheel drive layout has been the norm in small cars since the 1970s; however, Renault claims that by putting the engine in the back the Twingo features more cabin space than it would otherwise and has a tighter turning circle, making it more manoeuvrable, especially in the city.
The new Twingo is based on the same platform as the upcoming new versions of the Smart family and is the result of a close collaboration with Daimler.
Unfortunately, Renault has yet to release any information on the Twingo's oily bits; however, it seems likely that a range of 1.0-litre three-cylinder engines will feature heavily in the line-up. It also seems fairly likely that a higher-powered Renaultsport version of the Twingo will be released in due course.
Looks-wise, the new Twingo stays relatively faithful to the Twin'Run concept which was unveiled at last year's Monaco Grand Prix and will be available in a choice of four colours: light blue, white, yellow and red. Renault also claims that the Twingo's shape was inspired by the Renault 5 of the 1970s and 80s.
As is quickly becoming the norm in the small car market, the Twingo is available with a broad range of customisation options, enabling you to enhance/ruin (delete as applicable) your Twingo's looks as you see fit.
More details will be released when the Twingo makes its debut in Geneva next month.
