The all new Fiat Panda goes on sale this Saturday, with a wide range of different models.
With the new Fiat Panda going on sale in the UK this weekend the Senior Product Manager at Fiat, Rob Lake, is keen to explain its 'unique selling point'. The new Panda, he says, is not trying to compete with small cars like the Volkswagen up!
"up! is about being a small car, Panda is about trying to give a big car feel to a small car," he said, at the UK launch for the Panda in Wiltshire this week.
"up! has a narrow model range with one engine; Panda has a wider range with four engines." Taking into account the three different trim levels and other options, he points out that this means that there are 20 different Panda models in total.
"Our USP is about choice in the segment. Like the 500, customers want to have plenty of choice."
Fiat are the leading manufacturer in the A segment, and last year the Fiat 500 was the segment's best-selling car. The Panda was the eighth highest selling vehicle last year with slightly under 6,000 sales, compared to 24,000 for the 500. This year Fiat is aiming to sell 10,000 units of the new Panda.
Later this year, sometime in the autumn, two more Pandas will be released - Trekking and Climbing. The first is a full 4-wheel drive vehicle, and the second is a two-wheel drive with additional traction control technology. There are also rumours of a 100bhp Panda Hot Hatch.
Prices for the new Fiat Panda start at £8.900 for a 1.2-litre Pop model, and go up to £12,250 for a 1.3-litre 75bhp Multijet with 'Lounge' trim.
