Citroen has released the first official images of the new C4 Picasso, which goes on sale here in the UK in September.

The new C4 Picasso was previewed by the 'Technospace' concept at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, and is claimed to weigh 140kg less than the outgoing model, offering class-leading interior space and sub-100g/km CO2 emissions.

Based on the PSA Group EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform 2) platform, the C4 Picasso uses aluminium, high-strength steel and a composite rear floor to keep weight to a minimum. Citroen claims that the new C4 Picasso "now weighs the same as the C3 Picasso."

The weight saving, combined with improved aerodynamics, mean that the new C4 Picasso emits around 30g/km of CO2 less than the outgoing model.

The new Picasso is 40mm shorter than its predecessor but features a 55mm longer wheelbase. Citroen claims that the Picasso offers best-in-class interior space, while boot space has increased by 40-litres to 537-litres.

On the inside, most of the car's essential controls are accessed via two screens -- a seven-inch touchpad and a twelve-inch panoramic HD screen.

In addition to this, the Picasso comes with a 360-degree parking system, which uses four cameras to give a bird's eye view of the car, and park-assist, which automatically assists the driver when manoeuvring into a space.

Also available from next year will be Citroen Multicity Connect, a system which provides the driver with information such as the nearest petrol station, hotel or restaurant, along with the latest weather updates and travel reports.

Citroen has confirmed three diesel engines for the C4 Picasso range -- an 89bhp 1.4-litre unit and two 1.6-litres, developing either 114bhp or 148bhp.

The most economical of these is the 1.4, which emits just 98g/km of CO2 and returns a claimed 74mpg.

Citroen has yet to confirm pricing details, but expect the C4 Picasso to cost from around £20,000. A Grand Picasso is expected to join the range next year.
