Order books for the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV have opened today, with prices for the car starting from £28,249, after the government's £5,000 plug-in vehicle grant.
For that, you get the entry-level GX3h Outlander PHEV, while two other variants, the GX4h and the GX4hs, are also available, priced from £32,899 and £34,999 respectively.
Mitsubishi is keen to point out that the Outlander PHEV is the only plug-in hybrid in the UK which does not carry a price premium over its conventionally-fuelled equivalent, with the GX3h costing exactly the same as the Outlander diesel GX3 auto. The other two models in the range cost £1,000 more than their diesel counterparts; however, Mitsubishi claims this is due to their enhanced specifications, not their hybrid technology.
The Outlander PHEV is fitted with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, with electric motors fitted to both the front and rear axles. On electric power alone, the Mitsubishi can travel for up to 32.5 miles at speeds of up to 70mph, with the range increasing to 512 miles when the petrol engine is also used.
The total power output of the system is around 220bhp and the hybrid SUV can achieve 148mpg on the combined cycle, while emitting just 44g/km of CO2. Not only does this make the Outlander PHEV free to tax, it also excludes it from the new, more stringent London Congestion Charge.
Entry-level GX3h models come with 18-inch alloys, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, privacy glass, a leather steering wheel, electric folding mirrors and Bluetooth as standard.
On top of this, the GX4h also gets a seven-inch touchscreen sat-nav, HID headlamps, heated front seats, a reversing camera, leather upholstery, DAB radio, an electric sunroof and a powered tailgate.
Top-of-the range GX4hs models add adaptive cruise control and forward collision and lane departure safety systems.
The first customer cars are expected for delivery in May.
