Fun fact: the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star was originally supposed to signify Mercedes's dominance on land, sea and air.

Over the years, the nautical and aeronautical divisions of Mercedes took something of a back seat while the German firm concentrated on making some of the most rock-solid road cars the world has ever seen, (not to mention a few F1 World Championship-winning engines).

However, Merc took flight again in 1999 with the introduction of the Eurocopter EC145 helicopter, which has a Mercedes-designed interior, and now the company is presenting designs for a 14-metre-long luxury yacht.

The 'Granturismo' yacht is being developed by Mercedes's UK-based Silver Arrows Marine division and is due to come on to the market during 2013. And what's more, it has been designed by Mercedes-Benz's automotive design team.

"Giving shape to a boat was an exciting challenge for automotive designers like us," said Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz cars.

"We wanted to create something special and what we have come up with is indeed unique. The 'Silver Arrow of the seas' embodies pure emotion and stands for luxury, style and pleasure."

Marketing waffle aside, the Silver Arrows yacht certainly looks quite impressive and, although it's still in the design stage, we should see the final production version in the not-too-distant future.
