An amazingly simple addition to Mercedes-Benz safety technology will cut down the time it takes for firemen to cut people free from car accidents.
All it takes is a set of stickers which Mercedes are locating on their cars that will give vital information to emergency responders. The information is kept in the form of a QR code which can be read by the average smart phone and can rapidly access data which will reduce the level of risk to road casualties as well as the firefighters themselves.
Currently the fire service use databases which can take some time to return results, particularly if it is not immediately clear which exact model the car happens to be. The databases also involve expensive subscription fees which fire services must pay to maintain access to.
Information can include the locations of airbags and safety systems as well as live power cables in the case of hybrid vehicles. The new technology has been welcomed by The Fire Service College and Craig Flannery, their Learning & Development Manager commented: ‘We’d like to be in a position where all cars have QR Codes, simply because it’s going to reduce the amount of time taken to extricate the casualty, which in turn is going to improve survival rates.’
