This is the new Mercedes S-Class Coupe, the two-door version of Merc's top-of-the-range plutocrat barge and the replacement for the current CL-Class.
As you'd expect, the S-Class Coupe is built on the same platform as its bigger brother and features the same sumptuously elegant interior. The Coupe is, however, a full 89mm shorter than the saloon and 85mm lower, all of which contributes to making the two-door car look more streamlined and aggressive than the four-door.
The long bonnet, flared wheel arches and 20-inch alloy wheels all help to give the S-Class Coupe a sporting look; however, it's at the front end where you'll find the biggest change. Buyers will be able to specify their car with what Mercedes calls 'expressive headlamps', each of which is encrusted with 47 Swarovski crystals. Whether or not this is a good idea we'll leave entirely up to you to decide.
From launch, the S-Class Coupe will be available in S500 form only, with a 4.7-litre V8 with 449bhp and 516lb-ft of torque. Mercedes is remaining tight-lipped on the subject of performance figures; however, the old CL with the same engine managed 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 155mph so we'd expect a modest improvement over the former figure.
Other drivetrains, all of which will almost certainly be carried over from the saloon, will be added to the range in due course. A higher-powered AMG version is also reportedly in the pipeline, featuring either a V8 or a V12 engine.
Like the saloon, the S-Class Coupe will come as standard with Mercedes' Magic Body Control system; however, unlike thee saloon, the Coupe will be offered with a new "curve tilting" function. The new system uses a stereo camera mounted in the windscreen to scan the road ahead and automatically shifts the base of each individual suspension strut to allow the car to 'lean' into corners a motorbike.
This effectively reduces the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle's occupants, which Mercedes claims gives greater driving pleasure and ride comfort.
The S-Class Coupe will go on sale towards the end of the year. Prices have yet to be revealed but are expected to start from around £100,000.
