The new Mazda Hazumi concept, revealed this week at the Geneva Motor Show, previews the next-generation Mazda 2 supermini.

Designed around Mazda’s new Kodo design language and featuring the firm’s new SkyActiv technology, the new 2 is expected to be lighter and more efficient than the car it replaces. The concept is powered by a new 1.5-litre SkyActiv-D diesel engine which Mazda claims delivers “outstanding” fuel economy without compromising on performance.

In addition to this, the Hazumi features Mazda’s new range of i-Activsense safety technology and the firm’s MZD Connect smartphone connectivity system.

The Hazumi’s name is a Japanese word which means to “spring up,” which Mazda claims was chosen to convey the image of a small animal, bursting with energy.

Mazda has yet to confirm when we’ll see a production version of the next 2; however, we expect it’ll be unveiled before the end of the year ahead of an early 2015 launch.
