The all electric Peugeot iOn has concluded its UK launch tour by meeting Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, at London's City Hall.
"I want London to be the electric car capital of Europe, so I am delighted that 2011 sees manufacturers accelerating their efforts to bring this technology onto the roads", said Mr Johnson as he inspected the iOn. "This is why we are introducing the first city-wide electric vehicle scheme, Source London, in spring this year to provide more infrastructure and support."
Source London has pledged to double the number of electric charge points, with 1,300 to be accessible to the public by the end of 2013. The Peugeot iOn - which has just completed a fortnight long tour of dealerships in Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Teeside and London - will be exempt from the Congestion Charge, and will benefit from free parking in some London boroughs. In addition, when the zero tailpipe emission iOn goes on sale it will qualify for a £5,000 Government grant, part of a £250m funding scheme for electric vehicles which will also be used to increase the number of charging points nationwide.
