The Nissan LEAF, which went on UK sale in March, has been awarded the top 5-star safety rating by independent consumer organisation Euro NCAP.

The all electric Nissan LEAF was subjected to comprehensive crash testing by the organisation, involving front impact, side impact, side pole impact, and whiplash scenarios. It scored 89% for adult safety, 83% for child protection, 84% for its on-board safety systems, and 65% for pedestrian safety. Those scores enabled the LEAF to claim an overall 5-star safety rating, the highest overall rating issued by Euro NCAP.

The floor mounted lithium-ion battery modules which power the Nissan LEAF passed the impact test, as did in-built battery safety systems such as automatic cut-off isolation which cuts power to the battery in the event of an accident.

The Nissan LEAF, the current World and European Car of the Year, is the first electric vehicle to be awarded five stars, prompting Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen to comment, "The standard is now set for the next generation of such cars on the European market."
