A Lamborghini Countach stole the show at the Historics at Brooklands auction by selling for a whopping £337,120 – almost three times its estimate.
The striking white 1982 model has just 8,500 miles on the clock having been stored for 23 years, and sparked a titanic bidding war which sent its sale price soaring over its £120,000-£160,000 estimate. Including commission and tax, the £337,120 is thought be a UK record sale price for the model.
Historics Auction Director Edward Bridger-Stille said after the sale, “Interest in the Lamborghini Countach has long been eclipsed by other marquee sports cars, but this emphatic result demonstrates that it’s now very much on the collectors’ radar. It’s also great that the car’s creator Marcello Gandini is now receiving the recognition he so richly deserves for such a landmark in automotive design”.
The event at Brooklands Museum saw almost 250 classic cars and motorcycles go under the hammer, with a combined sale total topping £2 million. Other exotic motors to sell on the day included a 1933 Lagonda 3.0-litre T7 Open Tourer for £105,000, a jet black 1961 Porsche 365B Convertible at £140,560, and a 1954 Austin Healey 100/4 – with AH 1004 number plate – which went for £49,840. Among the modern classics to perform well on the day were a 1983 Volkswagen Golf GTi Campaign which sold for almost £8,000, and a 377bhp Vauxhall Carlton by Lotus, a 1982 example ending two thousand pounds above its top estimate with a final sale price of £11,000.
