A jury of 22 European journalists who specialise in writing about light commercial vehicles have voted Renault’s Kangoo Van Z.E. the International Van of the Year 2012.
The Kangoo Van Z.E. is the first 100% electric van to hit the mass market.
The Kangoo Van Z.E. has already been hugely successful, picking up three awards. In addition to the International Van of the Year 2012 prize it has also won honours in both Denmark, where it also won a 'Van of the Year' prize, and Ireland where it won the accolade for 'Fleet Transport Green Commercial' vehicle.
Winning an impressive 104 out of a potential 168 points in this year's International Van of the Year prize, the all-electric van from Renault beat off strong competition from models such as the VW Caddy, Fiat Ducato and Iveco Daily.
Pieter Wieman, the chairman of the jury for the International Van of the Year Prize, explained the jury's choice saying:
"With the Kangoo Van Z.E. Renault brings the electric van within the reach of the normal European van user, thereby delivering a major contribution to environmental sustainability, one of the most important issues of the transport of goods by road nowadays."
The winning van itself is the first 100% electric van produced by a mass market manufacturer. By placing the battery underneath the floor Renault have managed to keep the load capacity of this van the same as it is in the traditionally powered version of the Kangoo. The 650kg maximum payload is also the same. It is being manufactured in two lengths and three different versions - the Kangoo Van Z.E. plus the two and five seat Kangoo Van Z.E. Maxis - offering the flexibility to carry either goods or passengers.
The Kangoo Van Z.E. is the first vehicle to be released from a range of four Z.E. vehicles that Renault plan to launch over the next 12 months. It will go on sale in the UK from 1st December and will have a list price of £16,990 excluding VAT. In addition to this the battery is hired from Renault for a monthly fee, with a range of options for different mileage and duration requirements. As an example, a 3 year/12,000 miles per annum contract is priced at £74 per month excluding VAT.
