Jaguar is preparing to display its new low-carbon XJ_e plug-in hybrid at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The figures are impressive. The XJ_e produces 329bhp and is capable of 0-62mph in less than 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 150mph but, despite this, it achieves 87mpg and emits just 75g/km of CO2.
The Jag manages to achieve these environmentally-sound credentials thanks to its innovative powertrain. Gone is the 5.0-litre V8 engine fitted to the conventional XJ and in its place is a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine and a 92bhp electric motor powered by a 12.8kWh battery pack.
The car's hybrid technology means that it can run on petrol power, electric power or a combination of the two. Jaguar claims that the XJ_e is good for 25 miles on the electric motor alone.
The XJ_e is part of Jaguar's drive to show that CO2 emission reductions are possible without compromising a vehicle's performance. Bob Joyce, Engineering Director at Jaguar Land Rover, said: "While the XJ_e is an experimental project, it highlights that JLR customers can expect some exciting low-carbon products in the future."
The XJ_e will be in display in the FoS-TECH Technology Pavilion at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.
