The UK’s North/South divide is nowhere more apparent than in the sale of supercars, according to a study into the subject.
Oracle Finance, who specialise in funding for supercars such as the Ferrari 458 and the McLaren 650S, have analysed the past 12 months figures to discover that sales in the South of the country are almost double those in the North.
The supercar finance company revealed that in the past year, 48 per cent of its deals were for customers based in the South, with the vast majority of those based in London and the home counties. In contrast, the Midlands and the North each accounted for 20 per cent of sales, with 6 per cent in Scotland, 4 per cent in Wales, and one per cent in Ireland. Yorkshire was the area which saw the most supercar sales in the north.
Peter Brook, Oracle’s Managing Director, said: “The figures really are clear – those in the south seem to have the desire and the spare cash. The good people of Yorkshire certainly like their supercars, but the finance packages we arranged there were nowhere near the numbers we arranged in the South. For years there have been reports of the difference in house prices and wages between the North and the South and now our figures demonstrate that there is a distinct difference when it comes to luxury car purchases too. We were shocked at just how much of a difference there was though – we weren’t expecting the South to account for more than double the North’s supercar purchases.”
“The North/South divide has been clearly demonstrated by our data on the super car finance deals we’ve arranged around the UK,” added Mr Brook.
