Infiniti has announced an entirely new naming scheme for its range of cars, with all models being renamed as either Q or QX models.
Under the new naming strategy, the Infiniti's range of luxury saloons will be branded as Q models, while the firm's off-roaders will be given the QX moniker.
The Infiniti G saloon becomes the Q50, the G Coupe and Convertible models become Q60 models, and the M becomes the Q70. Similarly, the EX crossover becomes the QX50 and the JX, FX and QX models become the QX60, QX70 and QX80 models, respectively.
Infiniti's president, Johan de Nysschen, explained the move, saying: "The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident.
"To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework. After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that 'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models."
We fail to understand the logic behind prefixing every single car with the same letter; after all, the whole point of giving a car a name is to let the consumer know what it is. Giving every car in the range a 'Q' badge seems therefore to be slightly counter-productive and akin to Ford renaming its entire model line-up 'Mondeo'.
The new Q50 (that's the G Saloon, in case you were wondering) will be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show next month.
