A hydrogen-powered Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell has completed a record-breaking journey of over 430 miles on a single tank, which the manufacturer claims demonstrates the viability of the method.
Taking 10 hours at an average 76km/h, and taking in a combination of both city and highway driving, the three-country route took Norwegian eco-campaigners Marius Bornstein and Arnt G. Hartvig from Oslo to Malmo via Gothenburg and Copenhagen.
For the independent test the pair used a production-standard Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, and exceeded the manufacturers stated range of 370 miles by over 60 miles.
Marius Bornstein, said: “We had planned to finish in Copenhagen, but realised there was enough hydrogen left in the tank for a longer drive. When we arrived at the filling station in Malmö we still had a few kilometres of range remaining. To achieve this distance on just one tank of hydrogen shows the potential of this technology and the ability of the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell. I believe this is a world record.”
Two years ago Bornstein and Hartvig travelled the 1,400 miles from Oslo to Monte Carlo to in an ix35 Fuel Cell to demonstrate the practicality of hydrogen power its refuelling infrastructure.
Frank Meijer, Head of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle at Hyundai Motor Europe, commented: “The distance travelled by the ix35 Fuel Cell demonstrates the viability and real-world benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology – it’s an electric vehicle with long-distance range. Hyundai Motor is the first automaker to mass-produce fuel cell vehicles, and we continue to promote the growth of Europe’s hydrogen refuelling network.”
The Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell is the latest model to emerge from a hydrogen-power development programme begun by Hyundai over 15 years ago, and the company’s maintains a dedicated fuel cell research centre at its Eco Technology Research Institute in Korea.
