Shock horror! A survey carried out by What Car? and Warranty Direct has revealed that Japanese cars are the most reliable in the world.

What Car? also revealed that smoking is bad for you and that walking out in front of a bus is "a bad idea." Or we could be making this up.

It seems that Honda makes the most reliable cars, with only a 1 in 10 chance of cars breaking down in a one-year period. Toyota and Lexus were close behind.

Premium marques such as Jaguar and Mercedes fared poorly, while Land Rover, despite a surge in quality in recent years, finishes at the bottom of the table.

The research was based on 50,000 Warranty Direct policies on cars between three and ten years old.
