Google has begun building its own self-driving car, with no steering wheel, accelerator or brake.

Until recently, Google's attempts at creating an autonomous car have seen the internet giant fit self-driving technology to existing models -- namely Lexus SUVs and Toyota Priuses -- however, Google founder Sergey Brin has confirmed that the company is to build 100 self-drive prototypes based on an original design.

The cars will be operated using two simple buttons -- stop and go -- and will navigate using a combination of GPS, sensors and camera data.

Google claims it has no plans to move into large-scale car manufacturing, and says that it plans to team up with other companies to develop the technology if the prototype is successful.

The cars will be limited to 25mph and will have two seats, a luggage area and a screen which shows the route.

"We’re really excited about this vehicle -- it's something that will allow us to really push the capabilities of self-driving technology, and understand the limitations," said Chris Urmson, director of the project.

Google expects its self-drive cars to be on the road "within a year" and ready for public use by 2020.
