Vauxhall has announced the new Astra ecoFLEX which, with carbon emissions of 99g/km, costs nothing to tax.

The new car has a 1.7-litre turbodiesel engine which not only develops an extra 5bhp over its predecessor but also boasts impressive economy figures – 76.3mpg.

Vauxhall has utilised a number of clever tweaks in achieving these impressive figures. The new car hunkers down on the road – it’s a full 12mm lower than a standard Astra – improving the aerodynamic efficiency of the design. New engine management and a special low-friction gearbox also help improve the efficiency of the car, minimising energy loss along the drivetrain.

Vauxhall now has a substantial competitor in the green hatchback stakes. The new Astra could poach valuable sales from VW’s BlueMotion range and similar offerings from other manufacturers.

Most importantly, of course, you’ll be able to drive the Astra ecoFLEX straight into the capital without paying a penny to Boris.
