India’s top motor show, the Auto Expo in Delhi, has seen its first global debut this year with the unveiling of the new Ford EcoSport.

The Indian car market is growing quickly, and its rising importance to the global market has been underlined by Ford's decision to unveil its new EcoSport small 4x4 in Delhi. The new Ford EcoSport is based on the Fiesta platform, and although it is currently still in concept form it is expected to go into production at the company's factory in Chennai and to be sold around the world.

The Fiesta platform means that the car is quite European in its looks, but the first markets are likely to be India and South America. No date has yet been set for the start of production, but the middle of 2013 is the most likely scenario. When and whether the EcoSport makes it to the UK market is also uncertain at the moment, but it is likely that it will go on sale in the UK sometime after its launch in the emerging Indian market.
