An electric version of the Ford Focus is now on sale, with prices starting from £28,500 including the Government's Plug-in electric car grant.
The Ford Focus Electric is powered by a 140bhp electric motor which is fed from a lithium-ion battery. Ford claims that the Focus Electric will hit a top speed of 85mph and has a driving range of 100 miles.
Owners will be able to charge the Focus Electric either through a standard 240-volt domestic electrical supply, which should take between 10 and 11 hours, or through a dedicated 32A charging station which should reduce this time to between 3 and 4 hours.
The Focus Electric is far from the cheapest electric car on the market, with cars such as the Nissan Leaf costing more than £10,000 less and it remains to be seen whether this price differential will reduce over time.
Perhaps as a result of the Focus Electric's steep price, Ford predicts first-year sales of just 30 cars. The Focus Electric will be joined by an electric version of the next Mondeo when the car finally goes on sale.
