Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been named International Engine of the Year award for the second year running.

Following on from its win in the 2012 International Engine of the Year awards, the three cylinder engine was chosen as the winner by a panel of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries. The engines were judged on driveability, performance, economy, refinement and successful application of advanced engine technology.

The EcoBoost, which is currently available in the Fiesta, Focus, B-MAX, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX, also won in the 'Best Engine Under 1.0-litre' category for the second time.

With a grand total of 479 points -- 71 more than its nearest competitor, the VW 1.4-litre TSI TwinCharger engine -- the EcoBoost achieved the highest overall score in the awards' fifteen year history. Ford also becomes only the third manufacturer to win the award two years on the trot, following VW and BMW.

Eventually, the EcoBoost engine will be rolled out across the Mondeo range and will also be fitted to commercial vehicles such as the Transit Connect, Transit Courier, Tourneo Connect and Tourneo Courier.

Ford's vice president of Global Powertrains, Joe Bakaj, said: "With a technology as mature as the internal combustion engine, it's very rare to achieve a true breakthrough, but that is exactly what the team accomplished with this engine.

"You have to drive it to believe a small three-cylinder engine can deliver such performance and fuel economy."
