The new sixth-generation Ford Mustang will go on display on the observation deck of the Empire State Building as part of the company's plans to celebrate 50 years of the iconic muscle car.
The Mustang will be on show for 54 hours in the run up to next month's New York Motor Show, with the stunt replicating the same display used in 1965 to display a prototype Mustang convertible.
Now, we don't normally bother telling you about the stunts car manufacturers use to drum up publicity for their new cars; however, we thought we'd make an exception in this case for two reasons: 1) This is the first Mustang which we here in the UK will actually be able to buy, and 2) the engineering behind this stunt is actually fairly impressive.
Getting a Mustang to the top of one of the world's tallest buildings is not easy. No crane can reach the 86th floor observatory and the spire above the narrow viewing deck makes helicopter delivery impossible.
In 1965, Ford's engineers sliced the Mustang convertible up into three pieces, carrying it up the observation deck in the building's original lifts. The new car is 180mm longer and 100mm wider than the original model, but by using computer engineering data, the engineers have devised a way of cutting up the car so it can be transported to the top of the building.
Once it's there, they'll have just six hours to put it back together before the car goes on show in 16-17 April.
The New York Motor Show opens its doors to the public on 18 April.
