While Premier League clubs have received much criticism for their reluctance to buy British, research shows the same cannot be said of Premier League footballers for whom British-built motors are the overwhelming top choice.
Luxury finance broker Oracle, who count many Premier League footballers amongst their clients, have scoured their records to reveal the top 10 most popular cars for football stars.
The Range Rover came top with 28, followed by the Bentley Continental GT with 26, and the Range Rover Sport on 24. Finishing the top 10 were the Audi Q7 (21), BMW X5 (18), Porsche Cayenne (16), Lamborghini Gallardo (13), Ferrari 458 (8), Maserati Gran Turismo (4), and Aston Martin DB9 (3).
With many Premier League footballers using tax-efficient finance packages to buy their dream wheels, the broker has been given a unique insight into their buying habits.
“We looked back at our records over the last five years to come up with this list and weren’t surprised the Range Rover was top”, said Oracle Finance managing director Peter Brook, “Bentley was extremely close to taking the number one spot in our Premiership poll with the GT, but it’s clear SUVs are a favourite with footballers.”
“Our football clients like their cars to be luxurious with high-up driving positions, which is why they prefer 4x4s to out-and-out supercars. Few cars offer all that like a full-fat Range Rover.”
“We can’t reveal which footballers use our services because of client confidentiality, but we work with some of the biggest names in the footballing world and have helped hundreds of players, managers and agents fund their dream cars over the years.”
The release of the data by Oracle has also highlighted the changing lifestyle of the top-flight footballer compared to their predecessors: The players of England’s 1970 World Cup squad must have been thrilled to be given their very own Ford Cortina 1600E, on loan for a year!
