Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has announced that Ferrari will produce fewer cars this year than in 2012, in an attempt to preserve the exclusivity of the brand.

But despite the plans for lower sales, Ferrari is also hoping to boost profits by offering greater personalisation and bespoke options on its cars.

7,318 cars rolled off the Ferrari production lines in 2012, but Di Montezemolo aims for Ferrari to sell fewer than 7,000 cars in 2013. This number does not include any of the recently launched LaFerrari models. The Ferrari range currently comprises the 458 Italia, the FF, the F12berlinetta and the California.

It's not the first time Ferrari has scaled back its production in the pursuit of greater exclusivity -- the firm previously announced plans to cut sales in 2003 for similar reasons.

Speaking to Auto Express, Di Montezemolo said, "Our exclusivity is the brand's equity... those who buy a Ferrari buy a dream and we want to ensure that we preserve that dream.

"In 2013 we decided to manufacture a lower number cars than last year. We want to prove that selling less cars can still increase profits -- despite the trend in the market."
