There are plans to make diesel drivers pay more in a bid to reduce emissions in towns and cities.
The government hopes that by introducing new taxes and charges, they can encourage car owners to switch to more sustainable and non-polluting fuel types in the coming years.
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London has gone as far as to say that an additional £10 charge should be levied on top of the current congestion charge for diesel cars. It is expected that many other local authorities will take a similar line of attack.
Cities including Birmingham, Sheffield, Bradford and Bristol are seeking to establish low emission zones in and around their central areas in order to address the issue of poor quality of air. It is said that every year 29,000 people suffer early deaths due to the effects of air pollution.
It could be as soon as 2020 that we see such charges in force in London and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is happy to see that efforts are being made the protect air quality.
Those vehicles which meet the Euro 6 emissions standard would find themselves exempt from the charges and petrol cars built before 2006 would be forced to pay. Many environmental groups have been calling for diesel cars to be banned in full; fortunately this isn’t an idea which the government entertains.
