Have you ever bought a flash new car to impress members of the opposite sex? Well, if you have, it seems like you've been wasting your money.

Nearly seven out of ten people believe that the car you drive makes no difference to how attractive you are, according to a survey from Contract Hire and Leasing.

Younger people are more likely to be dazzled by a flash set of wheels, with 33% claiming that an expensive car makes you more attractive, while only 24% thought the same in the 25-34 age bracket. Nearly 80% of drivers aged 65 or over believe that a car has no bearing on how attractive you are, although it isn't clear quite why you'd buy an expensive car to impress an old-age-pensioner.

The good news for Londoners is that 25% of all London residents think your choice of wheels makes you better looking, while only 7% of Scots hold the same opinion.

So, if you're a fat, balding middle-aged man and were thinking of buying an MGB or a Triumph TR4 to impress the ladies, it seems your money would be better spent on a treadmill and a wig.

Top Gear's round up of the best wigs to buy.
