Okay, let's get things straight. There are those who believe that the car chase in Bullitt is the single greatest moment in cinema history. And then there are those who are wrong.
Bullitt might not be the best film ever made -- I've seen it about fifteen times and I still can't remember what actually happens in it -- but the sight of Steve McQueen tearing up the streets of San Francisco in a Ford Mustang while being chased by baddies in a Dodge Charger makes up for all of the film's shortcomings... and then some.
And if you fancy getting your hands on the actual Dodge Charger which actually chased the actual Steve McQueen actually around San Francisco, this is your chance.

The Dodge Charger as it appeared in Bullitt. |
The Dodge Charger you see here is one of two cars which was used during the filming of the 1968 movie classic and is fitted with a 440 cu-in (that's 7.2-litres to you and me) V8 engine, producing 375bhp and giving a top speed of 127mph.
In the years since Bullitt was made, the Charger has been extensively restored, which is a good thing when you consider that the suspension must have been pretty knackered after all of those high-speed jumps. Oh, and despite the fact that, thanks to sloppy movie continuity, the car lost six hubcaps during the Bullitt chase sequence, the Charger appears to have a full set of wheel covers.
There are just three things we feel we should tell you about the Charger. Firstly, it's absolutely enormous -- unless your garage is the size of Wembley Arena it won't fit. Secondly, it handles like a yacht and is supplied with drum brakes on all four corners, which makes bringing the thing to a halt a heart-stopping experience. And thirdly, the asking price is $1,000,000.
The Dodge is currently listed for sale on www.hemmings.com and is located in Tucson, Arizona.
