The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has welcomed the Chevrolet Volt to its exhibition in Westminster. The exhibition is intended to display the breadth of the UK car industry to the public.

The hybrid vehicle drove onto its display stand without having to pay the congestion charge, thanks to the car's eco-friendly hybrid technology. A petrol engine generates electricity which is stored in the battery, giving the car an all-electric range of up to 60 miles.

The Volt has already won plaudits worldwide, and was named North American Car of the Year. The Volt goes on sale here next spring and buyers will receive a £5000 from the UK government towards its price.
