There’s great news for motorists as the government say they will ban parking fines made with the use of cameras.
Government has announced a deregulation bill which will make it illegal for companies or councils to dish out penalty notices using CCTV or ‘spy cars’ which have become more prominent recently. In future they will have to employ a traffic warden to physically fix a ticket to the windscreen of your car.
The only exceptions will come on ‘critical routes’ such as red routes and bus lanes where traffic is obliged to keep moving for safety reasons.
Government are seeking to make it easier for people to park in town centres in order to boost trade and make it easier for shoppers.
Eric Pickles, the Communities Secretary, said: “CCTV spy cars can be seen lurking on every street raking in cash for greedy councils and breaking the rules that clearly state that fines should not be used to generate profit for town halls.“
Today the Government is taking urgently needed action to ban this clear abuse of CCTV, which should be used to catch criminals, and not as a cash cow.”
Other changes to the law will include ensuring that a driver cannot be fined when a meter is out of order with no other means of paying and a possible 25% discount on fines where someone has lost an appeal at tribunal.
