Cardiff is officially home to the politest drivers in Britain, according to a report by LV= car insurance.

The behaviour of drivers was studied across 15 of the UK’s biggest cities, with Cardiff drivers scoring 97% of the maximum available marks for politeness.

The research found that motorists from the Welsh Capital were most likely to perform better and give way at roundabouts and junctions. They were also the most likely to thank other drivers and stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings.

Birmingham drivers were a close second, scoring 96% of the marks available.

Motorists in Newcastle on the other hand performed worse than those from all other cities that were studied. A score of 62% was well below the 78% average.

Considering the recent crackdown on anti-social driving, it is certainly the right time to start driving courteously, if you weren’t already.

Researchers from the car insurance company watched over 24,000 drivers and studied how they behaved in varying situations. According to the results, female drivers were politer than their male counterparts in almost all areas. They were more likely to give way at a junction, wait for a pedestrian to cross a road and indicate when turning right at a roundabout.

Other interesting finds included:

-          4% of drivers showed signs of ‘anti-social’ behaviour

-          Motorists in London and Edinburgh were most likely to tailgate

-          Drivers in Bristol and Newcastle were most likely to play music at an excessive volume
