Here's a story which is likely to get Daily Mail readers foaming at the mouth.

Canterbury City Council has defended its actions after painting a set of double yellow lines which are just 21 inches in length.

Parking on the lines -- which, incidentally, are too short to accommodate even a skateboard -- will result in a £50 or £70 fine.

Local resident Charlotte Sparrow said: "I can't believe the council would bother to paint yellow lines that short and then warn drivers that they face fines over [sic] for parking over something you can hardly see.

"It's petty rules and regulations gone mad."

Canterbury Council, however, claims that the lines are "crucial for separating different parking areas."

Bob Pollard, council street enforcement manager (now THERE'S a job title) said: "the lines are in a small gap that separates the 20-minute restrictions and residents' pay and display parking bays.

"The lines were placed to differentiate between the two different types of parking bay and avoid confusion."

The lines, however, are not the shortest double yellows in Britain. Nope, apparently there are a set painted in Norwich which measure just 17 inches in length.

Some will argue that this is just another fiendish way for councils to extort money from the beleaguered British motorist but, frankly, if you're so godawful at parking that you can't miss a 21-inch double-yellow line, you deserve a whacking great fine.
