A Lamborghini Gallardo brought traffic to a standstill on one of Britain’s busiest motorways after it went up in flames earlier this week.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the supercar caught fire in roadworks along the M25, between junctions 24 and 25 in Hertfordshire. It is not the first time this summer that police have had to close the motorway, after parts of it melted in the recent heatwave. You can read more about that here.
The fire, thought to have been initiated by a mechanical fault, sent a pillar of thick black smoke rising high into the sky and forced police to close three lanes on the anti-clockwise side of the motorway. Consequently the afternoon traffic was gridlocked for several hours.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "The incident occurred at approximately 1:10pm today.
"The vehicle was on fire and the police, fire and our traffic officers were called to the scene. The carriageway was partially blocked while the vehicle fire was attended to.
"The whole carriageway was open by 3:25pm."
The Lamborghini, worth well in excess of £100,000, was damaged far beyond repair. Fortunately the driver escaped unharmed.
Metropolitan Police commented: "The fire happened on the hard shoulder and the driver sustained no injuries.
"It is believed to be a mechanical problem that started the fire."
The Gallardo is not the first Italian supercar to catch fire in recent years; several other Lamborghinis and Ferraris have done so too, which has led to recalls from both manufacturers in the past.
