Li Weilei from Shanghai in China teamed up with four mechanics to build his dream car, the only problem is – there’s no engine!
Ten tonnes of recycled metal was brought together in a small workshop in Shanghai to produce a replica of the Batmobile from the Dark Knight Trilogy. It is remarkably close to the original, testament to the enormous attention to detail employed by the team.
The lack of an engine has meant that the car must be moved around by a scrap yard hoist and other cost-cutting measures have seen the project finished for a relatively thrifty £7,000. The men used their experience in cutting and welding to trim ten tonnes of scrap metal down to two tonnes of finished product. They polished the metal by hand to save money.
A policeman who took photos of the car leading to them going viral on the web said:
'We have had a lot of enquiries, but I hate to disappoint fans. The vehicle is actually a life-size model of Batman's futuristic car.
'It is quite amazing though - not the sort of vehicle you want to give a ticket to.'
The ‘Tumbler’ Batmobile replica went on sale this year and is a fully operating car with a 5.7 litre V8 engine and tyres which are 44 inches in width. Li Weilei can’t claim to have that sort of power under his bonnet but he’s certainly come close with the tyres-his rear wheels are a huge three feet wide. Li claims to have built twelve of the replicas, most of which are displayed around China.
