Have you ever found yourself in a car park and realised you haven’t got the right amount of change or a card to pay for your ticket? Well thanks to new technology being piloted by Audi, that problem may cease to exist in the near future.
The ‘Audi connect wireless payment’ scheme, which is currently undergoing a trial phase in the home of the company’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, sees a communication link established between cars and car parks. It will enable barriers to be raised and charges to be paid without the driver needing to do a thing.
Up to 13,000 connected test cars will be participating in the pilot project, which is the first step towards possible full integration of the service for Audi owners. It is part of a long term aim to establish wireless payment as another element of the Audi connect option. Google Earth, Google Street View, news, weather information and local fuel pricing are all already integrated.
The cars will communicate with the parking facilities via an individual RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) transmitter during the trial phase. The wireless transponder providing this link will be mounted on the inside of the windscreen and each driver will enter their RFID number online to register for the service.
The Ingolstadt Economic Development Agency (IFG Ingolstadt) is operating nine car parks which offer a total of 6,200 spaces for participants in the trial phase. Each driver will receive a monthly bill for any car parking charges incurred and the amount will be paid via direct debit from their account.
