Audi has launched a green A1 which manages 99g/km. Not only does this preclude drivers from London’s congestion charge, it also means that road tax is free.

Audi has managed this figure with a thorough revision of its 1.6TDi engine and a new five-speed manual gearbox with higher gear ratios for more efficient cruising. Not only has this cut emissions by 6g/km, it has also improved fuel consumption; the new car will manage 74.3mpg compared to its predecessor’s 70.6.

The new A1 will still crack 62mph in 10.5 seconds - more than enough for a car with eco-credentials as impressive as this – and will carry on accelerating up to 118mph.

This engine is available in all iterations of the A1.
