The Vauxhall VXR8 has emerged victorious in a prestigious fuel economy event.
It sounds bizarre but it's true, the 6.2-litre V8-powered Vauxhall VXR8 super-saloon showed the largest improvement in its official fuel economy figures than any of the other 30+ entrants in the UK's longest-running economy driving contest, the Fleet World MPG marathon.
This year the event was contested over two days, covering a 350 mile course in the Cotswold countryside which incorporated a mix of both A-roads, B-roads, and motorway driving.
Piloted by Chris Mooney and Andrew Duerden - Vauxhall's resident archivist and eco-driving expert - the VXR8 triumphed by virtue of achieving a remarkable improvement on its official combined fuel economy of over 53 percent. The Vauxhall VXR8 has an official combined fuel economy of 21mpg, but trumped this by returning 32.14mpg on the MPG Marathon course.
Driver Mooney said he and team-mate Duerden were "over the moon to win the overall best percentage improvement, and it just goes to show that the person behind the wheel can make a massive difference to fuel costs and carbon emissions. And, of course, that a 6.2 litre V8 is a very sensible choice of engine in the right hands."
The rear wheel-drive, V8-powered, Vauxhall VXR8 was revamped earlier this year, with a range of technological improvements in addition to a cosmetic facelift and new cabin.
Mooney and Deurden will be presented with a trophy at the MPG Mrarathon presentation evening at the Royal Automobile Club in London's Pall Mall on Wednesday.
