For a great quality car that is both fun and safe to drive, the Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES is a good choice. Practical, reliable and secure, this D3 DRIVe ES version of the XC70 is ideal for any family, even those on a tight budget. Smart, comfy and on the cheapside: what’s not to like?

PROS:  The Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES is just as practical as the other XC70s in Volvo’s range, but by far the cheapest both in price, and in running costs. The car’s engine gives a pretty awesome performance too.

CONS:  Being a two-wheel drive, it doesn’t have as much versatility as the four wheel XC70s. It can also be a tad noisy around town.

Behind the Wheel

With a combined mpg of 51.4, the Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES has a brilliant 1984cc engine well suited to its size. The manual car has a 6-speed gearbox and 20 valves, and because it’s a D3 gear hunting can be eliminated making it much easier to carry heavy loads. This makes it great for family holidays, long days out, or holding three boisterous kids and two Great Danes.

In terms of driving quality, the handling is still a little clunky at times, but the large 4x4 deals surprisingly well with excessive wind. It drives quite smoothly, and feels very safe from the high up seating position, both of which add to the cars safety factor. The Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES generates 295 lb-ft torque power at 1400-2850 rpm, and 159 bhp at 2900. In basic terms, this means that it takes just 10.2 seconds for the front-wheel drive to get from 0-60 mph, and that it can reach an impressive127 mph overall.

The Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES fun and overzealous engine doesn’t perform quietly however, so if you’re bothered by the low growling of the engine while you drive through the city, this could be a disadvantage.

Looks & Equipment

Sleek and sophisticated are two words that very much define this stunning version of the XC70. With classic, clean cut lines and soft, carefully crafted curves, the car’s huge 4828 body is cleverly hidden. The Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES interior is just as sophisticated: the five door vehicle trimmed beautifully with subtle colours and detailing, five seats (£1280 for leather) and tonnes of storage space in its 1600 litres boot.

Practical as always, Volvo’s XC70 range are all kitted to perfection as standard. This includes: a 410 blue tooth, mp3 connectivity and cd. It also includes: power-steering, alloy wheels, DSTC stability control, central locking, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control. For rear-parking sensors it is an additional £385, and for a sat-nav an extra £525.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES like all others in the XC70 range, got an incredible 5 star Euro NCAP, making it undoubtedly one of the safest and securest cars to date.

Comfortable, roomy, and full of extra features as standard, the Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES wins hands down when it comes to practicality, safety and reliability, making it a really great choice for someone looking to buy a family car.

It also comes with a 3 year warranty or 60,000 miles which pretty much sums it up as a great investment.

Value for Money

Though 4x4s are far from cheap, in fact most are very uneconomical, this particular model of the XC70 is easily one of the least expensive out there. At £29,065, the Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES is cheaper than any other in the XC70 range by at least £3000. Given that it has better performance than most suggests that it is not such a bad buy.

In addition, the XC70 D3 DRIVe ES emits a surprisingly low 144g/km of CO2, placing it in Tax Band F and insurance group 29. This gives it much lower insurance ratings than its fellow models, helping it to become more economical and thus much cheaper to run.

Depreciation costs are low because the car is so well established and in such high demand. Due to its 5 Star Euro NCAP rating, it is classed as extremely reliable and safe. Those factors, plus the fact that it is very practical make the Volvo XC70 D3 DRIVe ES a very good car choice.
