The Volvo S40 is versatile in that it handles efficiently around urban areas and also delivers an accomplished motorway cruise. Its steering is light and responsive while its road grip is impressive, allowing the driver to glide confidently through the tightest of corners with ease.
The suspension of the model can be quite firm however, and larger potholes and road imperfections can send a jolt through the cabin. Other than that the ride is generally a refined one, with a little wind noise at high speed the only noteable issue. Adjustment is excellent in terms of the driver's seat and steering wheel.
This car has a top speed of 130mph and can travel from 0mph to 62mph in 9.5 seconds. Its power output is 143bhp, and its torque is a standard 136 lb-ft.
The Volvo S40 is a fairly attractive saloon with smooth lines and a superb range of equipment provided as standard. The interior is finished in high quality materials giving the model a premium feel to it, while the controls are laid out neatly and efficiently. The dashboard is also beautifully designed. Standard leather seating further enhances the comfort of the cabin.
The external appearance of the car is enriched with alloy wheels, and can be enhanced with metallic paint for £565.
Standard equipment provided with the model includes cruise control, climate control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, satellite navigation, CD player with MP3 connectivity, electric door mirrors and electric front windows.
The car's warranty is standard; Volvo offer three years and up to 60,000 miles of cover. In terms of security, the car is fitted with central locking and an alarm for maximum security against theft.
The S40 has four doors and seats five occupants making it an ideal choice for a family car, with excellent access in to the vehicle. Front passengers will enjoy plenty of space all round, although rear passengers have a slight lack of headroom. The boot is of a fair size, although not as large as may be expected for a Volvo, offering 404 litres of space with the rear seats up and 883 litres with them folded down.
The safety has been well established as there is a driver airbag, passenger airbag as well as airbags in the front side area of the vehicle to maximise protection for all passengers.
The Volvo S40 2.0 SE Lux Edition 4dr is available from £20,760, which is an excellent price for a vehicle of this class which includes such a wide range of technology as standard.
In terms of fuel economy the model performs on average at 37.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 176g/km. These figures are ok for the class, but certainly nothing to get excited about.
