PROS: The turbocharged engine has just enough power to satisfy. The cabin is of high quality and well made. The dash is uncluttered and intuitive. It has a versatile seating layout and can be converted into a very large load area.
CONS: It’s a little expensive and not a particularly fun car. The third row of seats is a nuisance to fold flat.
This Volkswagen Sharan’s ride is smooth and refined when cruising on motorways, with only a touch of wind noise from the door mirrors. On a more interesting road and it maintains its composure surprisingly well for such a hefty vehicle, with body roll kept in check, while the steering is accurate too. The 6 speed DSG double-clutch gearbox works very well the majority of the time delivering almost seamless shifts, but it can be unintuitive at times such as roundabouts.
The driver’s seat has height adjustment and the steering can be fully adjusted so most drivers should be able to find a decent position. The dashboard is very well laid out and made of quality materials. Forward visibility is good through the wide screen, although the little side quarter lights can obstruct your view into corners.
The 1.4 litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces maximum figures of 148 bhp at 5800 rpm and 177 lb-ft at 1750-4000 rpm, which doesn’t sound much, but because maximum torque is available so low in the rev range it feels quite fast. A 0-62 mph time of 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph are hardly hugely impressive figures, but this MPV is more about convenience.
The Volkswagen Sharan SE 1.4 TSI DSG 5dr is a smart and stylish people carrier but still noticeably bulky. Inside, you get climate control, electric windows front and rear, electric door mirrors, rear parking sensors, cruise control, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth and a CD as standard. It also comes with alloy wheels, remote central locking and immobiliser and alarm.
Among the available options are metallic paint at £495, Satnav for £725 and leather seats for £1,935.
Boot space is reasonable at 375 litres with all seats in use, but with all seats folded down, the loading capacity rises to a huge 2297 litres. There is enough space in the cabin for seven adults to travel comfortably. Numerous compartments around the cabin prove useful for handy stowage of smaller items as well. The sliding rear doors offer excellent access to the rear seats as well as being very useful in tighter spaces.
This Volkswagen Sharan comes a five star Euro NCAP rating and many other safety features including seven airbags, ABS, Isofix child seat mountings and stability control.
Volkswagens have above average reliability, but this car also comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty.
The Volkswagen Sharan SE 1.4 TSI DSG 5dr is a competitively priced at £27,495 and is a very practical family car. It has a spacious, comfortable cabin for up to seven passengers and with the seats folded it has a cavernous luggage space. It feels sturdy and well crafted, but it’s not the most appealing people carrier out there.
It has a strong yet frugal engine, which will keep running costs low with a combined cycle of 37.2 mpg helped in part by a Stop/Start feature and a CO2 emissions figure of 178 g/km, both of which mean the taxes and running costs won’t break the bank.
