The Agila is the smallest and cheapest model from the fleet of Vauxhall cars. Available with three engines, the Agila 1.2i 16v engine is the best pick and it is a vast improvement to the older model of the Agila. It performs well and is very fuel efficient, representing good value for money. The Agila is fun to drive and delivers a refined ride.

PROS:  The Vauxhall Agila SE 1.2i 16v 5dr looks cute. It has a spacious cabin and it is very easy to drive. It also has air conditioning, tinted glass and alloy wheels as standard.

CONS:  The quality of the interior is not great and it feels like it’s made out of cheap plastic. There is no ESP. It is a bit more expensive than most of its rivals.

Behind the Wheel

The Vauxhall Agila is easy and fun to drive whether you are driving around the city or out of town on twisty roads. But since it is mainly built for city driving, this is where it performs the best. Surprisingly, there isn’t too much body roll despite its height.

Of all the versions of the Vauxhall Agila, the 1.2 16v has the best performance and refinement. It has a power of 92bhp at 6000rpm. Acceleration is nothing to be proud of, taking 18.2 seconds for it to get from 0 to 62mph but once there, it has no trouble maintaining it. It has a top speed of 109mph.

Although fun to drive and frugal the Vauxhall Agila is not great for long journeys. The seats are a bit uncomfortable. The engine gruffs when prodded for speed. Road and wind noise are barely audible though and almost all bumps and road imperfections are absorbed with impressive ease.

Looks & Equipment

The new model of the Vauxhall Agila SE 1.2i 16v is a big improvement on the old model which looked a little boring and had a cheap finish. It is given larger headlights and a curvier front end and there are 10 colours which you can choose from. But as good looking as it is outside, the same cannot be said about the cabin. The interior looks cheap and it feels like it is poorly built.

The Vauxhall Agila 1.2i SE trim comes with the following equipment and accessories as standard: air-conditioning, body-colour bumpers, tailgate with electronic touchpad release, height-adjustable front seats and head restraints, lights-on audible warning, electrically operated front windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors, multi-function trip computer, tiltable steering column, 60-40 split-folding rear seat back and 15-inch alloy wheels with locking wheel bolts and 185/60 R15 low profile tyres.

For driver convenience, the audio controls are mounted on the steering-wheel. For entertainment, the Vauxhall Agila SE has a CD player with MP3 connectivity and radio.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Given that the Vauxhall Agila SE 1.2i 16v is a small car, it is surprisingly spacious. It could accommodate five adults inside although if you want to make the ride more comfortable, four would be the best number. The Vauxhall Agila has a high roofline so there will be enough head room for tall passengers. The boot capacity of the Agila is adequate and is up to city-standards. You can load up to 285 litres in the boot with the seats in place. Fold the seats and the Agila can carry up to 1050 litres.

Safety features for the Vauxhall Agila SE trim include driver’s and front passenger’s front and side-impact airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), emergency brake assistance (EBA), electronic engine immobiliser and speed-sensitive power-assisted steering. It also has three inertia-reel lap and diagonal rear seatbelts and ISOFIX child seat restraint system for outer rear seats.

Since the Vauxhall Agila is based on Suzuki’s Splash, it should be reliable and inherit the Splash's strong reputation for durability. The Vauxhall Agila has a 100,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Vauxhall Agila 1.2 16V with a manual gearbox is very fuel efficient with an output of 55.4mpg. It has CO2 emissions of 119g/km which puts it in a low road tax band of C.

A brand new Vauxhall Agila costs £12,125. On the downside, the Suzuki Splash, which is very much like the Agila, offers better value and more standard equipment. However the Vauxhall will probably retain its value better.
