PROS: The Urban Cruiser is economical, practical and cheap to run. It also offers decent performance figures.
CONS: The ride is firm and the cabin lacks style. The main downside to the Toyota Urban Cruiser, however, is the price tag; it is very expensive.
The 1.33-litre petrol engine offers 100bhp and 98lb-ft of torque which translates into a top speed of 109mph and a 0-62mph time of 12.5 seconds. This is fairly reasonable for a car of this type.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.33 VVT-i 5dr is well suited to life in town thanks to its light steering. It doesn’t offer much grip but, nevertheless, body control is still pretty good.
The firm suspension doesn’t do the Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.33 VVT-i 5dr any favours as it quite often makes the ride seem a little jittery.
The petrol engine only becomes noisy when it is worked very hard and wind noise is reasonably well contained on the open road. However, a fair amount of road noise finds its way into the cabin.
The interior offers a retro and funky feel. Despite this, the design is a little on the bland side and the materials used feel very cheap.
The one available trim level supplies the driver with a decent amount of standard kit. This includes alloy wheels, climate control, Bluetooth as standard, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, an alarm and an immobiliser.
MP3 connectivity, leather seats, rear parking sensors, sat-nav and metallic paint can all be added as options but will incur additional costs.
The Urban Cruiser comfortably accomodates four adults and their luggage. In comparison to some of the other crossovers in its class, the Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.33 VVT-I 5dr is very roomy.
The Urban Cruiser has however only been awarded a 3 star rating in the Euro NCAP safety ratings, which makes it the least safe car in its class.
Toyota have made sure that their untouchable reliability record stays intact and have designed the Urban Cruiser with solidity in mind. It comes as standard with a 5-year/100,000 mile warranty.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.33 VVT-i 5dr is extremely expensive for its size and is priced at £16,245.
On the plus side, running costs should be relatively low thanks to CO2 emissions of 129g/km which keep the Urban Cruiser under a low cost tax band: D. 50.4mpg (combined) is also pretty impressive and group 8 insurance should be very cheap.
The Urban Cruiser 1.3 VVT-i is better value than the four-wheel-drive diesel model but it is still too expensive for what it is.
