The Toyota Land Cruiser LC3 3.0 D-4D is the latest model in Toyota's legendary Land Cruiser range. In terms of off-road ability, nothing comes close but on the road, the Land Cruiser fails to offer the refinement of its rivals.

PROS:  The Land Cruiser is very practical, offers unrivalled off-road ability and will last forever.

CONS:  It will be very expensive to run, it lacks refinement and the diesel engine could do with more power. It only has five seats.

Behind the Wheel

Delivering 188 bhp at 3400 rpm with 309 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm, the Toyota Land Cruiser LC3 3.0 D-4D is capable of a fairly impressive top speed of 109 mph. Acceleration can feel a little sluggish but is far from the slowest on the market and the car reaches 0-62 mph in a fairly average 11.7 seconds.

Engine noise is kept to a minimum but the bulky shape of the car means that there is plenty of noise generated by the wind and road. Off-road, there is nothing to match the Land Cruiser but on the road, it is outshone by its rivals in terms of speed, agility and refinement.

Looks & Equipment

In terms of looks, the Land Cruiser is a bit of a Marmite car. Some love the rugged simplicity and sheer size of the car whereas others find it the height of vulgarity and typically Japanese bad taste.

There is a decent supply of in-car kit including power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and an advanced stereo system with CD and MP3 connectivity. A full leather interior is also fitted as standard but unfortunately there is no option to have a built-in sat nav or rear parking sensors added.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

High safety credentials are provided thanks to driver, passenger and front side airbags as well and active front head restraints.

With the seats up boot space is a little limited with just 104 litres available, whilst folding the seats down provides a fairly decent 974 litres.

The Land Cruiser is built like a tank and should outlive you. However, Toyota do include a five year/100,000 mile warranty to put your mind at rest.

Value for Money

At £35,705 this car is relatively good value and is two grand cheaper than the cheapest Land Rover Disco.

The car incurs fairly steep road tax costs under tax band J and insurance premiums also fall under insurance group 29. Fuel economy of 34.9mpg (combined) is fairly average for a car of this class but the Land Cruiser will still cost a fortune to keep on the road.
