If you are looking for something that offers a little kick but doesn’t cost the earth, the Toyota Aygo Go! 1.0 could be right up your street. A relatively inexpensive car to buy, the Aygo Go! 1.0 is extremely cheap to insure and still looks stylish on the road. It’s a great option for a new driver or for those that wish to invest in a nippy city car. However, with compromised internal space those with large storage requirements may need to look elsewhere.

PROS:  Retro appearance, consistent and easy to control, the Toyota Aygo 1.0 fits with those on a smaller budget and still has enough style to appeal to the younger generation.

CONS:  The main downside of the Toyota Aygo 1.0 is the lack of space. The boot is a little on the small side, which makes it awkward to load and the interior is also quite compact. This in turn makes it short on passenger space and overall the model could do with a little more finesse.

Behind the Wheel

For a compact city car, the Toyota Aygo Go! 1.0 possesses a wide track, which certainly helps with the handling of the vehicle. The car comes with 14-inch tyres which may sound a little on the slim side but this doesn’t affect the grip levels on the road and gives the car a stylish appearance. Others things to note include the hefty bite under breaking.

The Toyota Aygo Go! 1.0 offers a revamped version of the sharp handling, first generation Yaris. This allows for little body roll and lateral movement is far better controlled in comparison to some of the other budget vehicles on the market.

One impressive feature of the Aygo Go! 1.0 is the speed sensitive steering. Just enough feel is provided when cruising and it’s still light and easy when driving around the city. This makes it the perfect model for those looking for a vehicle capable of handling the regular drive to work whilst still being able to handle open roads at weekends and holidays.

Power output is pretty average at 66 bhp with torque figures of 68 lb-ft at 3600 rpm. A top speed of 98 mph is unlikely to cause a stir, especially considering acceleration is rather laborious, reaching 0-62 mph in a lengthy 14.9 seconds. However, what the car lacks in power it makes up for in efficiency and handling - offering a stable drive which will go easy on your wallet.

Looks & Equipment

The Aygo GO! 1.0 has to be one of the coolest budget cars on the market at present. It offers a bullet-shaped profile and a low sporty stance and the quirky design is continued throughout with a boldly designed interior.

One of the best things about this car is the fact that you can plug an MP3 player directly into the car’s media system. This certainly keeps the door pockets neat, as you will no longer need them to be filled with rattling CD cases.

This is a huge benefit - especially as the Aygo Go! 1.0 doesn’t offer a lot of space in the cabin. With no glove box, there is only a shelf to place items such as sunglasses and mobile phones, which may be a deterrent for some drivers.

Both the seats and the driving position boast high levels of comfort and the light-up dashboard looks pretty impressive at night to make the interior more appealing to the average consumer.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Aygo Go! 1.0 combines an economical yet enjoyable engine with cute looks, which certainly make it one of the finest city cars to drive.

However if you intend to get more than the kids and a few bags of shopping in the vehicle then you will need a larger car. The Toyota Aygo offers only 139 litres of luggage space which is great for short trips to and from school or work but makes holidays and longer journeys a struggle.

The Aygo Go! 1.0 also scored four stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests for both adults and child occupant safety and this is thanks to the range of safety features it offers as standard. An immobiliser and alarm are fitted to deter thieves and front side, passenger and driver airbags help to protect against accidents.

Value for Money

Low carbon emissions of just 106 g/km put this model firmly in road tax band B. Combined with the fact the car benefits from low insurance premiums under insurance group 3, this means that the Aygo Go! 1.0 is relatively cheap to run and good value for money with a purchase price of just £11,230.

Fuel economy is also impressive, achieving a figure of 61.4 mpg. This means drivers are not stung with regular trips to the petrol station and can benefit from a car which offers fairly decent performance at a low cost.

Overall, the Aygo Go! 1.0 is a great value car which delivers decent performance without costing a fortune. This is an ideal vehicle for families providing they are willing to make a slight compromise on interior comfort and size. Those unwilling to make this sacrifice will need to look at larger models and other manufacturers to get a more suitable car.
