The Avensis T Spirit 2.2 D-4D is a great option for a large family who aren’t able to splash out on more lavish brands. Rival models from BMW and Mercedes can end up costing twice as much when you include all the extras that come as standard on the Toyota. Toyota's legendary reliability is also a bonus.

PROS:  The T Spirit 2.2 D-4D is packed with plenty of kit as standard, along with an impressive console display system. The interior is also well styled and extremely comfortable.

CONS:  Although this model is more expensive than the standard model it doesn't seem to be money well spent. The cheaper diesel engine performs just as well and is cheaper to run.

Behind the Wheel

For a car of its size the Avensis T Spirit 2.2 D-4D is surprisingly economical, capable of an impressive 51.4mpg. By comparison, the similarly priced Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi only offers up 47.1mpg. However, the Avensis T Spirit 2.2 D-4D reaches 62mph in 8.9 seconds - eight tenths slower than the Mondeo.

As you might expect from a car of it considerable size, the Avensis has less than sporty handling. However it is probable that the person looking to buy a saloon car of this type won’t be too bothered by that, probably preferring long distance performance to cornering ability. The ride is smooth and quiet enough to make even long distance motorway travel comfortable, which could be a massive plus for executives or those looking to clock up the miles in a company car.

Looks & Equipment

The previous version of the Avensis looked a little clunky and rushed, however the new Avensis has vastly improved styling. The lines have been made smoother and sleeker and the lights have been given a new look. The rear end has been revamped and new air intakes have been added.

This particular T Spirit version of the Avensis has an impressive array of features that come as standard. Amongst them are Satnav, climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic headlights and fully electric windows. One of the major benefits of the Avensis is the amount of space inside the car. It’s big enough to ensure that three rear passengers will be comfortable for even long journeys. Leather seats also come as standard, adding to the comfort of the car.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The T Spirit 2.2 D-4D scored the maximum rating of five stars on the Euro NCAP crash test. Along with this it comes with a long list of additional safety features as standard. There are front, side and curtain airbags. There is also an extra airbag the steering column to protect the legs of the driver. Stability control is fitted as standard, further improving the Avensis' impressive safety credentials. An alarm system and deadlocks have also been included in the standard model.

Predictably, Toyota provides an impressive warranty for the Avensis, being valid for five years or 100,000 miles. With the Japanese manufacturer’s reputation for reliability and build quality, it is unlikely that reliability is going to be a significant issue. The boot ofthe the Avensis is very spacious, although it is slightly smaller than the similarly priced Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDi.

Value for Money

Toyota has set a price of £26,105 for the Avensis T Spirit 2.2 D-4D, which is quite a lot of money for an Avensis - for the same sort of money as the Avensis you could have a BMW 318d. However, the Avensis is a lot more car for the money than the Beemer and if the Premium badge is unimportant to you, the Avensis is a better bet.

The Avensis T Spirit 2.2 D-4D is not the most environmentally-friendly of cars. The size of the car combined with its large engine ensures that CO2 emissions are relatively high for a family car. Having said this, the Avensis seems frugal in comparison to the competition, producing 149g/km of CO2 - the similar 2.2 TDCi Mondeo churns out 159g of CO2 every kilometre.
