The Renault Grand Modus Hatchback Dynamique 1.6 VVT Auto 5dr is a small MPV ideally suited for medium sized families. This model offers an improved version of the standard Modus with a 1598 cc petrol engine which delivers the 111 bhp of power and 112 bhp of torque.

Relatively poor mileage means this car proves to be more expensive than the other Renault Modus model but its powerful petrol engine and power steering helps the user to drive efficiently and comfortably.

PROS:  The car is liked for its cute styling, funky cabin and affordable running costs. This model boasts a spacious interior and high level of efficiency whilst a combination of power steering and good handling means the car drives well on all types of roads.

CONS:  Low mileage and high prices are some of the troubling issues which may act as deterrent and fail to match strong competitors such as the Nissan Note or Vauxhall Meriva.

Behind the Wheel

The model delivers mileage of 36.7 mpg and proves to be economical so far as fuel expenses are concerned. A 1.6-litre petrol engine with 111 bhp is available but it only comes with a four-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel is the better choice if you intend to cover long distances or will regularly have a full number of passengers and luggage on board. It's available with either 86 bhp or 106 bhp and both pull well from low revs without too much noise whilst economy is an impressive 63mpg in the less powerful version.

The Grand Modus is not great fun to drive, but it is easy and feels assured. It corners accurately and feels accomplished at full speed. It is not troubled by bumpy roads and the drive quality is improved over the standard Modus, as the Grand Modus’ wheelbase is slightly longer.

Body roll is noticeable on sharp country bends but a tight turning circle and light power steering ensure effortless parking.

Looks & Equipment

The Grand Modus has come with constant refinements that have improved upon the looks of pervious versions.

This model comes with a good range of standard kit which includes: central locking, power steering, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric front windows, electric door mirrors, cruise control and a stereo with CD compatibility.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Grand Modus has experienced its fair share of issues and whilst top specification Dynamique equipped cars offer impressive luxury, entry-level cars are less desirable. There are some issues with the engine as well in some models which the user needs to check with the dealers.

The Grand Modus offers a 305 litre boot capacity and ample room in the cabin for passengers, making it ideal for family use. This combines with an easy to navigate layout to offer owners great practicality and comfort.

Unforunately reliability is a real issue with this car and Renault are not known for strong build qualities. Previous models were plagued with faults and this means buyers should exercise caution when looking at these vehicles. Of course, the car will come with a standard warranty but buyers should take the poor reputation for quality into account.

Value for Money

Priced at £14,260 the car caters to the need of medium-sized families and fuel efficiency of 36.7 mpg is unimpressive, making this car's value for money a little low. Even CO2 emissions for this model are a little steep at 179 g/km - pushing it into a relatively high road tax band (I).

Better returns are offered with the diesel models which have far better effeciency and help customers to keep running costs to a minimum.
