PROS: The Panamera is fast, good to drive and seats four in comfort.
CONS: It is very expensive and it's hardly what you'd call a 'looker'.
The Panamera's 3.6-litre V6 engine develops 296bhp and 295lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 150mph. The engine has to be worked quite hard to give its best and you might find that you're better off with a larger capacity unit.
Porsche have achieved the impossible and made the Panamera feel like a Porsche to drive. It's nowhere near as good as a 911 or even a Boxster but it is agile, crisp and nimble and, for a car of this size, that is quite an achievement. However, the ride can be a little harsh around town.
The Panamera is not the best looking car in its class and it is easily outclassed in the looks department by the gorgeous Maserati Quattroporte. The interior is superb - the design is typically Porsche - and the quality of the materials is exemplary.
Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, cruise control, parking sensors, part leather seats, a CD player and Sat-Nav. Optional extras include MP3 connectivity (£227), Bluetooth (£445), rear seat entertainment system (£2419) and metallic paint (£777).
The Panamera is easily big enough to accomodate four adults in comfort although the boot isn't particularly big, offering just 445-litres with the rear seats up and 1263-litres with the rear seats folded flat.
Euro NCAP have not tested the Panamera but it is likely to be very safe and comes with stability control and eight airbags to protect you in the event of a crash.
It should also be very reliable and is offered with Porsche's 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.
At £62,783, the Panamera is very expensive. Having said this, its main rival, the Maserati Quattroporte is nearly £20k pricier. It will also be expensive to run, managing just 25mpg and emitting 265g/km of CO2, putting it into VED band M.
Porsche enters the executive car market with the Panamera with mixed results. It's an excellent car and drives beautifully but it's very expensive and hardly the best looking car in its class.
