PROS: The tiny Peugeot 107 1.0 Urban Lite offers quirky looks and a gutsy engine along with low running costs and solid build quality.
CONS: The 107 is noisy and unrefined on the open road. The boot is both small and tricky to access.
The Peugeot 107 1.0 Urban Lite comes with a three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine that delivers a fairly lowly 68bhp. However, in a car of this size and calibre this is more than sufficient and the 107 feels fairly nippy around town.
Top speed is 100mph and 0-62mph takes a fairly agonising 14.2 seconds. The car's small stature and sharp turning circle make it easy to handle and manoeuvre, however the steering is unresponsive and lifeless.
The driving position won't suit everyone because the steering column only adjusts vertically and there's no height adjustment for the seat. Still, there's a fresh and fun-loving atmosphere to the cabin with stylish designs incorporated throughout.
The amount of road and wind noise that builds up at higher speeds is excessive and disruptive but the engine performs quietly around town.
The 107 Urban Lite model offers four airbags, split-folding rear seats and a CD player with MP3 input socket as standard features alongside seat belt pre-tensioners and power steering.
The 107 is not exactly a stunner but it's neatly styled and quite attractive for a city car, even when you factor in Peugeot's ubiquitous grinning corporate front end.
The small cabin of the 107 1.0 Urban Lite willingly accommodates four passengers as long as they’re not too tall but leg room is fairly restricted and the car also has a small boot which makes it impractical for long journeys. With the seats in place, just 139-litres of space is available, expanding to 751-litres when the seats are folded down.
In terms of quality, there is a lot of exposed metal with hard plastics used throughout the interior and this may not be to everyone's taste. That being said, the car feels relatively sturdy and well built and, as a collaborative effort between Toyota and Peugeot, reliability is unlikely to be an issue.
With a four-star Euro NCAP rating for safety, the 107 is a relatively good investment. Standard safety features include driver and passenger airbags but the absence of front side air bags lowers the car's performance in this area.
Cheap to buy and run, the 107 costs just £8,695. On top of these initial savings, owners can reap the rewards of future savings thanks to high fuel efficiency which allows the car to achieve an impressive 62.8 mpg on the combined cycle.
Other running costs are also kept low with the car falling under the cheapest insurance group (1) and one of the cheapest road tax bands (B) thanks to great green credentials and low carbon emissions of just 103g/km.
This makes the Peugeot an economical first car to own and with decent resale values, this is a great investment for those looking for a small but capable city car.
