If you are searching for a medium family car that offers practicality, safety and economy in a desirable package, the Nissan Qashqai+2 1.6 dCi Tekna could be the car for you. With its stylish looks, low running costs and excellent specification, it is a car that families can enjoy and rely upon.

PROS:  The smooth and refined 1.6 litre diesel engine has no shortage of power and is economical too. Tekna models have plenty of lavish kit including leather seats, a panoramic sunroof and a reversing camera.

CONS:  The 1.6 petrol model is much cheaper to buy and the extra kit is pricey.

Behind the Wheel

The Qashqai+2 has a 1.6 litre, 4-cylinder, 16V petrol engine that produces a good burst of power. A power output of 115 bhp is generated with 236 lb-ft of torque and this translates to a top speed of 112 mph, whilst accelerating from 0-62 mph takes 12.9 seconds.

This engine is smooth and refined and copes well with everyday driving. There is a choice of four other engines and this means drivers have plenty of choice when it comes to balancing performance with efficiency.

The strong suspension deals easily with bumpy and uneven surfaces, resulting in a smooth and comfortable ride. There is a fair amount of body lean through corners but the steering offers plenty of feel - although it can be a little heavy when parking. The Qashqai is extremely refined and the 1.6 litre petrol engine is very quiet. Wind and road noise are well-isolated even on faster roads.

Looks & Equipment

The Qashqai+2 has a well-crafted exterior but the plastics in the interior are a little cheap. All Qashqais are generously equipped and even the entry-level Visia models come with alloy wheels, four electric windows, electric mirrors, a CD player and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Acenta trim offers climate control, a CD changer, parking sensors, cruise control, and automatic headlamps and wipers on top of this whilst a Stop/Start system is available at additional cost.

The n-tec cars get sat-nav and a panoramic sunroof whilst this top of the range Tekna benefits from a full leather upholstery, xenon headlights and a reversing camera. Metallic paint is available at additional cost.

The dashboard is clear and well-organised. The steering wheel adjusts for both height and reach and the driver’s seat alters for height whilst offering good support. The elevated driving position delivers excellent front visibility.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Qashqai+2 has seven seats but realistically only children will fit in the third row. The rear headroom does not match some rivals but the boot is large with 410 litres of space on offer with the seats up and 860 litres when the seats are down.

The car features impressive safety kit that includes six airbags, stability control and active front head restraints to reduce whiplash. However the curtain airbags do not extend to the third row of seats. The car comes with an immobiliser, visible VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) deadlocks and marked mechanical parts to deter thieves. Reliability should not be an issue either as Nissan have an impeccable record in this department and the Qashqai finished in the top 40 models in the 2011 JD Power customer satisfaction survey. The car also comes with a three-year warranty for 60,000 miles.

Value for Money

The Qashqai+2 Tekna is priced at £25,445, which is considerably cheaper than the Volvo XC60 but more expensive than the Peugeot 3008. All Qashqais are well-equipped and the top of the range Tekna offers a great range of features to ensure a comfortable drive, representing excellent value for money.

Its fuel economy is excellent and its carbon dioxide emissions of 133 g/km put it under road tax band E - the lowest in the range. However it is the most expensive car in the range to insure under bracket 22. Reliability is excellent and resale values are high.

The 1.6 dCi Tekna has a superior specification and is a great prospect for families looking for a well-specified, practical, safe, large family car.
