The return of the much-loved Morgan Plus 8 name at last years Geneva Motor Show harks back to the Rover V8-powered model of the same name that remained in production and largely unchanged for over ...
Morgan Plus 8 Overview
The Plus 8 is fitted with a BMW V8 engine which churns out an impressive 390bhp, making for a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds. The handling is crisp and precise and the Plus 8 is a hoot to drive thanks to its well-balanced chassis and rear-wheel drive layout.
The cabin isn't as sparse as it is in some of Morgan's less expensive offerings -- you get a CD player but not much else. This isn't a car you could use every day thanks to the fiddly hood and lack of luggage space, but if you only intend to use the Plus 8 for the occasional Sunday morning thrash, you're going to love it.
The only downside to the Plus 8 is its price tag. At over £80k, it's quite expensive for a car which you can't use every day.
Background
The Morgan Plus 8 was introduced in 1968 and was originally fitted with an engine based on Rover's legendary 3.5-litre V8. Originally fitted with a four-speed Moss 'box, the Plus 8 was given a fifth gear in 1977 and fuel injection in 1983. The engine capacity was increased to 3.9-litres in 1990, and a 4.6-litre option was offered from 1996. The original Plus 8 was killed off in 2004 and the name was revived in 2012 for the current model.
Summary
The Plus 8 is probably the best car currently made by Morgan. It looks sensational and -- thanks to that meaty BMW V8 -- goes like stink too. The only snag is the high list price, but if you can justify spending over eighty grand on a car which makes an Austin Allegro seem futuristic and a Mazda MX-5 seem practical, you won't be disappointed by the Plus 8.
